Ember by Rachel Van Dyken ~ BLOG TOUR & REVIEW

RELEASE DATE: FEB 19

I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.
I know only pain and survival.
That is until the Cappo's sister walked into my life.
And changed everything.
She's a light who makes my darkness darker, her smile makes my heart turn to ice, and I can't escape the fear her seductive looks instill--knowing it's only a matter of time before I fail--again, and take her for myself.
This is the story of my redemption.
But it's not pretty...I died, and now I'm alive, but not living, breathing but not surviving. I am Phoenix De Lange, son to a murdered mob boss, estranged brother, horrible friend, monster in the making, newest leader to one of the most powerful families in the Cosa Nostra.
And I will have my vengeance.
Or die trying.
I am Phoenix De Lange.
Death is all I know.
Until she offers me a piece of life--I can't resist taking.

Review by: Sam

When the ARC of Ember arrived on my kindle, I swear, I DIED! This is one of my most anticipated books EVER because this series.....IT IS INCREDIBLE and just keeps getting better and better. BUT, I fell in love with Tex when we got his story 'Elicit' and I could have bet my ovaries on the fact that Rachel had ruined me for any more of her characters.....until Phoenix!

We get to meet Phoenix throughout the entire series and first impressions of the guy are NOT very good! The hurt, lies and pain he had caused his friends and the men he considers his family was not up for redemption. But everyone has a story to tell, everyone has flaws, everyone has secrets they prefer to keep buried and everyone deserves to tell everything from their side. Phoenix DeLange is broken, but we do not realise just how broken he is....until this book.
The demons this man has to fight every single day because of the actions of himself are heart wrenching. He knows what he has done, he knows that he is a disgrace and he believes he deserves to be PUNISHED, always!
He is the bodyguard of Bee Campisi, the cappo's kid sister, the cappo who he betrayed. Bee is this innocent, beautiful light in all things dark and she see's Phoenix for who he is NOW, not the man he once WAS. This situation could be enough to finally push Phoenix over the edge of sanity.
I loved Bee's character, her sweet, young and fresh persona are just some of the beautiful characteristics that add to her charm. The past she has also had to endure is saddening, especially from her father.
Phoenix is broken, so devastatingly broken that when I was reading the book from his POV, I found myself unable to breathe through tears. This guy cannot even uphold 'normal' daily tasks because he doesn't think h is worthy of anything good.
This book brought me so many emotions. I cried, I swooned, I laughed, I was frustrated, I got mad, and I cried some more.
Rachel Van Dyken has stretched her literary capabilities to brand new heights in this book, her words are so powerful and hold such intensity that I swear, she has ruined me.
This book is INCREDIBLE.

5+++ Stars

Rachel Van Dyken has done it again and yes I say that after every Eagle Elite book.  What can I say? They just keep getting better and better and the stories get more suspenseful, darker and a whole lot hotter. Ember was just phenomenal! I was drawn to Phoenix since Elite and then with everything that went down in the following books, I was itching to get my hands on this broken man. I knew his story was going to be gritty and heart tugging but I was not prepared for just how much I would feel for him.

One thing that really stood out to me was how hard he is on himself. How he feels he doesn’t deserve the least bit of pleasure so he deprives himself of normal, everyday things like eating a full meal. Yes there was so much hurt and damage he caused to Nixon and the gang but it takes Bee, a Campisi and Tex’s little sister to see right through Phoenix. I really loved the dynamic and the contrasts of these two it was his hard to her soft and his dark to her light and that is exactly what she was to him- light. The development of their relationship, the banter, the push and pull were all done flawlessly.

This story was written in three POVs- Phoenix, Bee and Sergio. I loved that Sergio played a HUGE part in this story and came to one conclusion- HE’S AN ASSHOLE!! But damn I love that asshole!

This is the Mafia people so of course there was a ton of suspense and big secrets revealed that had poor sick me (I had the flu while reading this) literally flying from a laying down to position to sitting up on my bed, leg shaking not being able to wait to see what would happen next.

There are three things I wanted to do throughout this book 1. Shoot Tex in the balls 2. Bitchslap Sergio 3. Jump in my kindle and hug Phoenix…..HARD!
Rachel is just amazing in her writing, her story telling and her character development.  We meet some new players as well as see some of what the “family” is up to and leave it to my boy Chase to provide some great comic relief.

This book has everything in it a great mix of emotion- and boy did I just feel for these characters especially Phoenix and Bee and their struggles both together and individually, nail biting suspense and some serious WTF moments!  Each book in this series is just amazing and this series is like a crescendo it just keeps riding and rising and when you think it can’t take you high enough……..BOOM you are blasted to an entirely new level.

I cannot wait for the next book (the prologue for Elude has me needing that book like YESTERDAY!). Keep in mind this series is best read in order! I give Ember...

5- heart clenching- stars!

Damaged, hurt and broken…all things we can see from the outside. If we take the time to look with in some one and really see them we would see beyond all of that and see love, determination and acceptance. Phoenix De Lange was many things a killer, a rapist and simply just a man. This book was AMAZING and THRILLING…so wanted and needed from this series. The actual need to feel and see Phoenix was almost craved like a drug. I was so moved by his story and utter determination not to be seen that I wanted to scream ‘I see you!”. This book was a fantastic addition to The Family and it did not disappoint.
FREAK’N Bee and her strength and admiration just about killed me! She saw through the hurt and crap put in front of her and saw a man worth every second of her time and energy. Saving him was her goal but what she didn’t realize was that they saved each other. She needed saving just as much as he did. Together they would go up against the odds that were not in their favor and attempt to heal each other.
I LOVE this whole family to death! Their faults are just as memorizing to read as their victories. There comedy in the face of danger is an awesome break from the high strung day to day life in the mafia world. Their protection and care is almost more than I can take some chapters. They are an amazing bunch of characters to watch and develop.
Bee and Phoenix were so amazing to watch develop as individuals and as a couple in this book. Their ugly backgrounds although similar were the force that brought them closer together. Their ability to see beyond the monster is what made their relationship stronger than ever.
I 100% LOVED THIS BOOK!!! The underdog got his story and it was as beautiful as it was heartbreaking. Rachel has a way of drawing you in as a reader to the point that you are a sobby mess…then she holds your hand and guilds you back to find the redemption that was there all along. She is a mastermind at creating a strong believable story full of angst and beauty. There are moments when I want to throw my kindle or go all mafia and beat a character with a tire iron …and I love it!!!! This series is amazing and so full of Mafia goodness I am just so thrilled as a reader to have the opportunity to read them!
I 100% recommend this book. It’s an amazing ride worth all of the angst and feels that you will receive from it.

                                      5 star all the way!

EXCERPTS
PROLOGUE:
Phoenix

“Do it,” my father spat. “Or I will.”
I looked at the girl at my feet and back at my father. “No.”
He lifted his hand above my head; I knew what was coming, knew it would hurt like hell but had no way to fight back — he’d already starved me of my food for the past three days for arguing, for trying to save the girl and her cousin.
His fist hit my temple so hard that I fell to the ground with a cry. The click of his boots against the cement gave me the only warning I’d have as he reared back and kicked me in the ribs; over and over again he kicked. The girl screamed, but I stayed silent. Screaming didn’t help; nothing did.
I waited until he was done — I prayed that he would kill me this time. I prayed so hard that I was convinced God was finally going to hear me and take me away from my hell. Anything was better than living. Anything.
“You worthless—” Another kick to the head. “—piece of shit!” A kick to my gut. “You will never be boss, not if you cry every time you must do the hard thing!” Finally, blessed darkness enveloped my line of vision.
I woke up from the nightmare screaming, not even realizing that I was safe, in my own bed. With a curse I checked the clock.
Three a.m.
Well, at least I’d only had one nightmare — that I’d remembered. I’d been living with Sergio for the past week; his house was so big that I’d basically taken the east wing, and he’d taken the West, said he’d hated living alone anyway. I wasn’t stupid; I knew the guy wasn’t exactly a big fan, but it worked. I needed to stay in the States while I figured shit out.
And I wasn’t ready to leave. Not when I needed to learn all I could from Nixon. Not when I had responsibility.
And not when I had those black folders freaking burning a hole in my mind.
Luca hadn’t just left me an empire; he’d left me secrets. I wasn’t sure what was worse, knowing everything there was to know about those I was supposed to be protecting or knowing that at any minute one of them could turn on us.
“Hey!” Bee barged into my room.
“Damn it!” I pulled the blankets over my naked body, my heart picking up speed at her tousled hair and bedroom eyes. Tex’s sister, Tex’s sister. My body wasn’t accepting that — physically it wasn’t accepting any information other than she was beautiful.
And it was dark.
I looked away, scowling.
“I heard screaming.” Bee took a step forward, her perfume floating off her body like an aphrodisiac or drug, making me calm, making me want something I had no business wanting.
“Yeah, well…” I gave her a cold glance. “…clearly I’m fine, so you should go. Actually, why are you here? You know you live with Tex, right?”
She shrugged and sat on my bed. I clenched my fists around the blankets to keep from reaching out to her. It was getting harder and harder to ignore her warmth — when I lived in a constant state of near-death cold.
“He’s with Mo, and they need privacy. I’m not stupid. So I asked Sergio if I could move in for a while.”
“You did what?” I asked in a deadly tone, one I was sure would probably give her nightmares later.
She grinned. “I’m your new roomie!” Bee bounced on the bed and sent me a shy look from beneath her dark lashes. “Admit it, you miss our slumber parties.”
Forget the nightmare — I was looking at it.
