Alright, this one is for you fantasy, YA to NA readers out there. I’ve read some of KA Linde’s adult contemporary books, and LOVED them, so when this one came up, I jumped right on it, despite the difference in genres. And I am SO glad that I did!
Cyrene’s story reads a bit like historical fiction, but you can feel the bits of fantasy weaved throughout, even before Cyrene realizes it. Her life seems almost idyllic at the beginning of the book. She’s been raised in a first class family, she is favored by the king AND the prince, and for the most part is able to keep out of trouble. But that’s when everything starts going down hill.
I think my favorite thing about Cyrene is that she is a STRONG female main character. Yes, she may get caught up in girly things once in a while (like dancing with handsome men) but she has a really good head on her shoulders. She knows when to say no, and she is constantly moving towards what’s best for her. If she knows something is the right thing to do for herself, she makes sure it happens. That’s not to say she doesn’t run into a detour or three.
Another thing I really liked was the way the story was told. It is mostly from Cyrene’s point of view. But every once in a while we get to peek behind the curtain, see what’s happening behind closed doors of other characters, and those pieces are intricately weaved through Cyrene’s storyline.
And last but certainly not least, the secondary characters are fantastic! Some you will grow to love, and others you will love to hate. They are certainly not flat, and it’s exciting to watch Cyrene’s relationships develop with them. And although I would still label this story in the romance area, it’s really about all the different kinds of relationships we have with people, from family to friends, and enemies to lovers. Who can you trust? And who can trust you?
I can’t believe I have to wait until 2016 to read the next book. I MUST know what happens next!

I could not have been more pleasantly surprised by The Affiliate. I took a chance and read something different. It was a risk I'm glad that I took. K.A. Linde brings us a world that is so vivid in detail that you can't help but imagine and see it clearly in your mind. It's a world full of mystery, magic, and a slew of characters that take you on this adventure.
I really enjoyed Cyrene. She's a girl who has come of age and is ready to be presented, for the King and queen to decide her fate. She's feisty and funny, always having to hold back the smirk on her face. Upon being presented, a mess of events begin to unfold, ones she soon finds herself trying to answer for. It's a situation that not just anyone could deal with.
Cyrene has run-ins with all sorts of characters throughout her journey. We get answers to some questions while others are left unanswered while we wait for the next part of this story. It's K.A. Linde at her best, giving us angst and mystery that keeps us coming back for more.
