Synopsis
In Robin York’s provocative new novel, two young ex-lovers find themselves together again in the shadow of tragedy—and an intense, undeniable attraction.
Caroline still dreams about West. His warm skin, his taut muscles, his hand sliding down her stomach. Then she wakes up and she’s back to reality: West is gone. And before he left, he broke her heart.
Then, out of the blue, West calls in crisis. A tragedy has hit his family—a family that’s already a fractured mess. Caroline knows what she has to do. Without discussion, without stopping to think, she’s on a plane, flying to his side to support him in any way he needs.
They’re together again, but things are totally different. West looks edgy, angry at the world. Caroline doesn’t fit in. She should be back in Iowa, finalizing her civil suit against the ex-boyfriend who posted their explicit pictures on a revenge porn website. But here she is. Deeply into West, wrapped up in him, in love with him. Still.
They fought the odds once. Losing each other was hard. But finding their way back to each other couldn’t be harder.

Harder starts out with Caroline travelling to Silt because West's father has been killed. Caroline knows West will be so focused on taking care of his mom and Frankie, his little sister, that no one will be taking care of him. The fact that Caroline is willing to be there for him after everything he has done to her, scares him spitless. Because he is so scared, he does something super terrible to make Caroline leave.
West wants a better life for his sister Frankie and talks their mother into giving him guardianship. West and Frankie leave Silt and head to Putnam where West had attended college the year before. Caroline starts seeing West on campus but he avoids her. Things come to a head when Caroline gets an emergency call from Frankie's school. Caroline and Frankie start hanging out when West is at work; Caroline corners West to talk about Frankie and some of the problems she is having at school.
Both Caroline and West use the time they are spending together for Frankie to their own benefit - they are still in love with one another and know it but don't know how to get it back. West doesn't know how he can get Caroline to forgive him for what he's done but he needs her to - he isn't complete without her. Caroline doesn't know how she can get West to see in himself the man that she sees - he blames himself for everything that has gone wrong in his life and it's been largely out of his control.
As you read Harder, you realize West is placing more pressure on himself than others do. The life lessons that Caroline helps him see are so easily applied to our own lives. Harder is a journey of self discovery and growth. Harder illustrates how we place obstacles in our own paths because we lack faith in ourselves and our abilities. Harder is about learning to talk about your feelings and learning to share those feelings makes you stronger - makes your faith in yourself harder to break.
My final thoughts about Harder: Will Krishna and Bridget get their own book? Will Frankie get a book too? Will we see Caroline making a run for Pennsylvania Avenue?
I recommend reading Deeper before reading Harder. I look back on the complete tale of Caroline and West with fond memories. I look forward to introducing my friends to them.
